THE SURGERY

MAIN STAGES OF THE OPERATION

Obesity surgery in Paris

Patient fasted for 7 hours prior to surgery of all food and unclear drinks, and nil by mouth for 3 hours prior to surgery (no coffee, tea or fruit juice)

 

Arrival at the clinic and installation in a private or shared room

 

On admission, the patient signs the consent forms

 

Verification of the biological examinations by the nurse

 

Patient prepared for the operating theatre (iodine, shaving if necessary, gown, compression stockings, etc.)

 

Patient brought to the theatre on a stretcher

 

In the recovery room, the anaesthetist places a venous catheter. Pre-anaesthesia medication is administered

 

Installation on the operating table in the gynaecological position with the dressings nurse, porter and assistant (the screen is placed at the patient’s left shoulder, the surgeon standing in the “French position” along the stomach axis)

General anaesthesia administered by the anaesthetist and possible anaesthesia nurse

 

Surgery during 1½ to 2 hours by the surgeon and his assistant

 

Patient is placed in the recovery room for extubating by the anaesthetist and the recovery nurse

 

Monitoring in the recovery room until fully awake for minimum 1½ to 2 hours

 

Return to the ward by porter

 

Patient put to bed by stretcher-bearer and ward nurse

 

Prescription for antalgics, anticoagulants and possibly antibiotics, antisecretory medication and treatment for any pathologies

 

Monitoring for the effectiveness of antalgics on a pain scale (laparoscopic surgery is usually pain-free) and post-operative tolerance
