BARIATRIC SURGERY
DR. Le Goff in Paris
In 2014, 45,500 obesity operations were performed in France.
Obesity surgery is increasingly performed in France.
Women resort to it far more than men as they represent 80 % of the 40,000 patients.
This treatment is usually undertaken from the age of 39 and must meet specific indications:
BMI > 40 kg/m²
or
BMI between 35 and 40 kg/m²
associated with comorbidity
Why the Le Goff Technique (GPSP)
Dr. Le Goff in Paris
When everything else has failed against obesity, bariatric surgery (gastric band, Le Goff Technique, gastric sleeve, bypass surgery) is used as the last resort which will lead to:
Long-lasting excess weight loss
A reduction in comorbidities
Longer life expectancy
As such, bariatric surgery is life-saving and not purely aesthetic. In 2007, the first major reference study (SOS Study) showed that 7 years after bariatric surgery:
A 40 % reduction in overall mortality
A 92 % reduction in the incidence of diabetes
A 56 % in cardio-vascular risks were noted
In 2014, 45,500 obesity operations were performed in France; a figure that is growing constantly.
However, every year, the first three types of operation (gastric band, gastric sleeve, bypass surgery) are shown to be ineffective in the medium to long-term (40 to 50 % of patients regain weight), or lead to a number of post-operative deaths in the first 30 days (113 deaths in 2011) and very high complications and repeat surgery.
